A Look At: Helen Van Meene

Helen Van Meene was born in the Netherlands in 1972. She began photographing girls when she was young herself. Helen Van Meene's approach to portraiture photography is very specific. She photographs young and adolescent girls in a very controlled environment where she sets up the costume and scene where the girls are photographed. She captures them as they are in this sometimes awkward state in their life. 
Working primarily with natural light whether that is outside or inside through window light, it gives her photographs a distinct and cohesive look. Her photographs have a somewhat etherial and fantasy like quality to them, but her choice of subject keeps the photographs still feeling very relatable and natural.
